The Nokia 6680 promises a powerful set of features in a somewhat mundane design vaguely reminiscent of the Nokia 6682. Most notably, the Symbian smart phone offers two digital cameras, which, along with the 3G UMTS support, can be used for videoconferencing. You'll also find Bluetooth, a document reader, an MMC slot, and a digital music player. The triband (GSM 900/1800/1900) phone is not offered by a U.S. carrier, but an unlocked model will work stateside.

Up until just a couple of years ago, Motorola's reputation largely hinged on its famed StarTAC cell phone. As the handset that revolutionized the flip-phone form factor, the StarTAC made Motorola into a major cell phone player. Now, after a period of producing a string of quality but mostly unremarkable mobiles, Motorola is again on the forefront of cell phone design.

Following on the heels of the ultrathin Motorola Razr and Slvr is the ultrachic Motorola Pebl U6 for T-Mobile. Sporting a sophisticated and very soothing design, the Pebl is so striking that it deserves to be named as one of the most attractive cell phones ever made. Under the hood, it comes with a generous range of features, including Bluetooth, a speakerphone, and world phone support. We were hoping for a higher-resolution camera, and as with all of Motorola's designcentric phones, we weren't impressed with the controls, but the Pebl nonetheless is a looker and a solid performer.

Be warned that it's expensive at $299, and T-Mobile currently isn't offering any service rebates. We're not exaggerating when we say the Motorola Pebl is one of the cutest phones around. Shaped like, well, a pebble, it's clad in basic black and is nicely set off by a shiny metal hinge. We especially liked the oval shape and the rounded edges, and we enjoyed the textured feel of the rubbery casing. Though it's relatively compact (3.4 by 1.9 by 0.8 inches; 3.8 ounces), it has a solid heft when held in the hand.

On the front of the mobile, you'll notice a unique vertical external display that shows the time, battery life, signal strength, and caller ID (where available). Though it's monochrome and a bit small, the rectangular shape complements the phone's overall design. Still, we had a couple complaints. While you can change the orientation of the caller ID text from left to right, the font size is tiny and can't be altered. The display also doesn't support picture ID, and you can't change the backlighting time. Below the display is the camera lens, and while we normally bemoan the lack of a flash and self-portrait mirror, we're more understanding this time--the phone is just too pretty.

LG has a long history of churning out great basic phones for those of us who want a simple, no-frills device just for making and answering calls. The LG VX3400 is no exception, and though we have a minor aesthetic quibble over the monochrome external screen, everything else lived up to our expectations. And for the low price of $29.99 with a two-year contract, you certainly get what you pay for and more.

It comes in dark blue with gray accents, measuring 3.33 by 1.79 by 0.94 inches, and weighing in at a lightweight 3.0 ounces. The device has a smooth plastic body with rounded edges, making it feel really comfortable in the hand. The phone's hinge had just the right amount of give, and we managed to open and close the phone with one hand. On the front of the VX3400 is a small 1-inch-diagonal monochrome external screen. While we're somewhat disappointed by the lack of color, we did like the blue backlight that lit up whenever the phone was activated.

The external screen displays the date, time, battery, and signal strength, as well as caller ID. Of course the monochrome screen can't display photo caller ID, which sits just fine with us since the phone doesn't have a camera anyway. There's a stubby antenna on the top right side of the phone. The left spine is home to a headset jack and a volume rocker, while the right spine houses a dedicated voice command button.

There are two menu styles to choose from, icon or list view, and you can adjust the back-light timer of the main display as well as the keypad. You can also adjust the phone's contrast, as well as the font sizes for the calling digits, the text editor, and the menu font. We're fans of the VX3400's keypad, as the keys were well spaced and raised enough above the surface to allow for easy dialing and navigation. When pressed, the keys had a nice rubberized give, yielding easily to pressure. The navigation array consists of the regular two soft keys, a four-way toggle with middle OK key, a Send key, a Clear key, and an End/Power key. The four-way toggle also doubles as shortcuts to the speakerphone, the calendar, messages, and the sound settings.

The Sanyo SCP-3100 is yet another sign that push-to-talk (PTT) phones are gaining more mainstream appeal. This Sprint clamshell comes in not one, not two, but four different colors--Blue Energy, Always Pink, Espresso, and Pure Silver--which are definitely aimed at a wide audience. The SCP-3100 is also one of very few PTT phones that come with a camera, another sign that it's geared toward more users than just industry professionals.

The SCP-3100 is currently available for $199.99, though you can get it for $49.99 after a two-year service agreement with Sprint. At first glance, the Sanyo SCP-3100 may remind you of a kid's walkie-talkie, thanks to the plastic exterior and the large speaker grille; the phone looks a bit cheap as a result. Its size and heft (3.31 by 1.83 by 1.01 inches; 3.5 ounces) are good for smaller hands, but the clamshell too bulky to slip in a jeans pocket. Though it isn't a big deal, opening the SCP-3100 takes some effort due to a springy hinge, but the phone cradles your ear comfortably.

The SCP-3100 also has an extendable antenna. The Sanyo SCP-3100 reminds us of a kid's walkie-talkie. Underneath the aforementioned speaker grille is the 1-inch-diagonal, 96x32-pixel monochrome display, which is backlit in bright orange when activated. It displays the time, the signal, battery strength, and caller ID but not photo caller ID. Below that is an LED indicator that flashes when the camera is activated, while at the bottom of the front flip are the camera lens and a self-portrait mirror.

On the phone's right spine are the headset jack, a Ready Link button that doubles as a voice-memo button when the phone is on standby, and the volume rocker. On the left spine is a dedicated camera button. Open the Sanyo SCP-3100, and you'll be presented with a rather lackluster 65,000-color, 128x160-pixel display measuring 1.75 inches diagonally.

Several Windows Mobile handsets are expected to hit the market, but Motorola's MPx200 is currently one of the most affordable models, in some cases retailing for less than $100 with a two-year service plan from AT&T Wireless. An impressive blend of design, features, and function, this smart phone, which runs on Microsoft's Windows Mobile Smartphone OS, is ideal for those who want to sync with Outlook on their PCs.

Since it lacks a built-in keyboard, its usefulness as a wireless e-mail device is somewhat diminished, but unlike the Samsung SPH-i500, it features an expansion slot for adding SD/MMC media. Motorola's mobile won't leave a bulge in your pocket or your purse. In contrast to Palm OS smart phones such as the Samsung i500, the MPx200 does not feature a touch screen. Rather, Microsoft has designed its Windows Mobile OS for one-handed navigation.

Like many flip phones, it has a three-line external LCD that shows time, date, network strength, battery life, and caller ID when available. Adorning the left side of the phone is a scrollwheel that can be used to navigate the MPx200's menus or to adjust the volume while on a call. There's also an on/off button and an IR port. On the right-hand side, you'll find the aforementioned SD/MMC expansion slot (sorry, no SDIO support) and a headset jack. No card comes with the phone, but you'll probably want to purchase one with at least 128MB of memory.

Although there's an IR port for beaming and wireless syncing (sorry, no Bluetooth), most people will use the included USB cable to sync with Outlook on their PCs. A cradle also ships in the box, and frequent travelers will appreciate that you can recharge the phone by plugging the USB cable into your PC, should you leave the power adapter behind. Also included are stereo earbuds for listening to music or taking calls, as well as a belt-clip case.

Red has become a popular color for cell phones in the past couple of years, but on most crimson handsets the hue is restricted to the front face. Now Samsung takes the design trend a step further with the new Samsung SGH-T219 for T-Mobile. Rather than just show red on the outside, the SGH-T219 brings the color inside as well for a brilliantly colored keypad.

The feature set on this bad boy is quite simple--instant messaging support and a speakerphone are the main highlights--but the call quality didn't live up to expectations. You can get it for $19.99 with service. Design The Samsung SGH-T219 takes its basic design cue from Samsung's previous SGH-T619. Though it lacks a camera, the SGH-T219 has almost the same hinge design as the SGH-T619 and, except for the color change, the two handsets have near-identical profiles.

The SGH-T219 also weighs the same (2.8 ounces) as its sibling, though it's slightly smaller at 3.5 by 1.8 by 0.8 inches. The phone fits comfortably in our hands, but its overall construction didn't feel very sturdy and the hinge mechanism was a tad loose. This doesn't feel like a phone for an active user. The postage stamp external display sits in the center of the large black panel on the phone's front face.

As is the case with most low-tier phones, it has a monochrome resolution--but that's hardly an issue since the handset doesn't have a camera. You can change the contrast, but the backlighting time and font size aren't customizable. Users with vision impairments should take a close look before buying, as the display becomes very dim when the backlighting is off.

The 1.75-inch (160x128 pixels) internal display is serviceable, but it won't knock your socks off. The 65,000-color resolution is about what we'd expect of this caliber of phone; the user-friendly menu interface looks fine, but games and graphics aren't very sharp. You can change the brightness, the backlighting time, the background color, and the font size and style.

If you live or work in an area with poor cell phone reception or you drive through too many dead zones during your commute, you know how frustrating it can be to place a simple call. And though you might think a cell phone signal booster is the answer to your problems, it's important to think carefully about your options.

Those tiny metal decals that you've seen on television may look great, but there's a good reason you're paying just a few dollars--they hardly work at all. There are better performing, and more expensive, options such as the SignalBoost Cellular Amplifier from Wilson Electronics.

It's also easy to use both in buildings and in cars, even though we didn't love using a wired connection to our phone. Like the Spotwave Zen, the SignalBoost doesn't come cheap (between $150 and $200), but if all else has failed and you still can't find reception, it could be money well spent. Just be sure it works with your phone (Nextel handsets are not supported).

The SignalBoost consists of four parts: the main amplifier, a power cable, an antenna for catching the cell phone signal, and the cable that transfers the signal to your phone. The blue amplifier is relatively small, measuring 5x3.5x2 inches, so it can fit rather unobtrusively in the corner of a room or under a car seat or dashboard.

It's been a few months since Nextel introduced a new cell phone, so were we eager to get our hands on its new Motorola i670. What awaited us is a typical low-end Nextel phone--one with basic but dependable features and a bulky design that makes no effort to make a style statement.

That's not a bad thing--the carrier always has stuck with what it does best. So, if you're a Nextel fan and want a simple phone for making regular and Direct Connect calls, the i670 is worth a look. Though there's no external display and the internal display is nothing fancy, the i670 will hit your wallet if you pay full price ($249). Fortunately, service rebates can lower the cost to a reasonable $49.

The i670 has sleek lines and it takes its overall shape from the previous Motorola i850. Though the phone is not protected by layers of rubber coating like other phones from the carrier, it does enjoy a solid construction. The i670 is a typical Nextel-designed phone.

As we said, one drawback of the i670 is that it doesn't have an external display. As a result, you have to open the phone to see a caller's identity and to check the battery life. The other exterior features are reminiscent of previous phones from the carrier. The left spine holds a covered headset jack, a volume rocker, and a control for making push-to-talk (PTT) calls over Nextel's Direct Connect network.

On the top of the handset are a speakerphone control and a key for sending calls directly to voice mail without answering. Beside them is the stubby extendable antenna, while the covered charger port is on the bottom of the handset. Finally, the speaker is in its usual place on the bottom of the rear flap.

We've seen slider smart phones before, but really only in the form of larger, full QWERTY devices (i.e., Cingular 8525, UTStarcom XV6700) rather than the compact cell phone variety, such as the LG Chocolate. Like flip phones, this is one design area where smart phone manufacturers have yet to really dive in, but Nokia's willing to take the plunge.

First introduced at the 3GSM World Congress, the Nokia E65 is a slim slider phone for mobile professionals who value voice capabilities over messaging. (E-mail fanatics and power users should take a look at the Nokia E62 and Nokia E70 instead.) It offers a range of phone features, such as one-touch conference calling and VoIP support, and has good call quality and solid battery talk time.

Despite its sleek and sexy profile, there are some downsides to the phone's small size, as the navigation controls are cramped and frustrating to use. However, in the end, we think it's worth the extra effort. The quadband GSM Nokia E65 has not been picked up by a U.S. carrier, so you will have to purchase an unlocked version for a pricey $490.

The slider phone is compact and lightweight (4.1x1.9x0.6 inches; 4.0 ounces), making it comfortable to hold in the hand and cradle against your ear during a call. Plus, it features a soft casing that feels like leather, and it not only makes the phone easy to grip but adds a touch of luxury to the handset. There's a 2.2-inch diagonal TFT screen that displays 16.7 million colors at a 320x240 pixel resolution. It has a slightly lower resolution than its sibling, the E70, so we noticed colors weren't as bright and text and images weren't as sharp. Still, it's a nice display and we could still read it in direct sunlight.
